GRFD breaks ground on new station

The Grand Rapid Fire Department broke ground on a new Division Avenue station on Monday.

Grand Rapids Fire Chief Brad Brown says its been almost 30 years in the making. Brown says they purchased the lot south of their current station in the '90s with plans to rebuild and it never happened.

A $35 million budget allocation from the state is making the project possible.

The station is located at 1823 S. Division Avenue and will be 18,900 square feet. The station will have three bays for apparatus with GRFD operations on the first floor and living quarters on the second floor.
