Grand Rapids leaders react to Kent Co. Prosecutor not retrying Schurr case

Grand Rapids city leaders are reacting after Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced he will not retry former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr for the death of Patrick Lyoya.

Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand said the decision brings the painful chapter of the criminal legal aspect to a close.

"My thoughts are immediately with the Lyoya family," LaGrand said. "This news is undoubtedly a source of immense pain and disappointment and our community shares in their sorrow. Many in Grand Rapids will feel a deep sense of frustration and a belief that justice remains unfulfilled. These feelings are valid and must be acknowledged."

LaGrand said the city's work of healing and building a more equitable community is not over. The Mayor shares they are committed to ongoing reforms and dialogues to continue the process of strengthening trust between the community and the police department. He says they recognize and support the GRPD officers who serve the city professionally and honorably every day.

"The legacy of Patrick Lyoya's tragic death bust be one of enduring commitment to positive change. I implore every resident to channel their emotions into peaceful, constructive actions," said LaGrand. "Let us come together to support one another and continue the hard work of building a city where everyone is safe, valued and respected."

City manager Mark Washington says their hearts go out to the Lyoya family as they process the announcement from Becker. He says they also understand the strain this has taken on Schurr and his family.

"The City of Grand Rapids' commitment to accountability, constitutional policing and our comprehensive police reform agenda remains unwavering," Washington said. "During my tenure, we've made great strides in improving policing in our community. We recognize that today's announcement may intensify the need for trust-building with some segments of our community, and we are fully dedicated to that ongoing work."

The Lyoya family has filed a civil wrongful death suit against Schurr that is still ongoing.
