The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is finalizing protocol for lead testing in young children.
The guidance stems from legislation that was signed into law in October 2023. The laws require Michigan children to be tested for lead at 12 months and 24 months of age.
MDHHS Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian says they can more quickly address health risks associated with lead with the testing being performed at a very young age.
Parents may opt out of the testing program.
Four out of five homes in Grand Rapids and almost three out of five homes in Kent County were built before lead paint was banned in 1978.
