A proposal to require proof of citizenship to vote in the state of Michigan could end up on the ballot in November 2026.
The proposal would require people registering to vote in Michigan to show a birth certificate, passport or other documents verifying citizenship. Voters would also need to show a voter ID at the polls.
If people change their name or move to a new address, they would need to reverify their citizenship.
The State Board of Canvassers is advancing the proposal which means the Committee to Protect Voters' Rights can begin gathering signatures to try to get their question on the ballot.
