Jury selection starts in Schurr second-degree murder trial

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Jury selection will start today in the second-degree murder trial of former police officer Christopher Schurr, who fatally shot Patrick Lyoya three years ago in Grand Rapids.

Yesterday, the court called in at least two-hundred potential jurors.

Some have already been excused.

Attorney Matthew Borgula, who represents Schurr, says that he thinks it will be difficult to seat a jury.

"Especially when you have plaintiff's attorneys who don't hesitate to give their opinion on whether or not he's guilty and have nothing to do with the case other than they're in a position in a civil case,” Borgula said.

“We're going to have a lot of people who have seen those billboards that talk about what individual plaintiff’s attorneys think the outcome should be."

Borgula is referring to billboards that carry Ven Johnson's name that have the phrase "Justice for Patrick."

Johnson represents the Lyoya family in a $100 million federal civil lawsuit, which is separate from the criminal case.
