Michigan law enforcement says car crashes are the number one cause of death for young children.
Kent County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Dietrich says Michigan's updated car seat safety laws will keep kids much safer and is expected to reduce injuries and fatalities.
Under the new laws, children are expected to be in rear-facing seats until they are two-years-old or until they reach the seat's height and weight limits.
Children ages two to five must be in a forward-facing seat with a five-point harness. Kids ages five to eight can move into a belt-positioning booster seat and can sit without a booster seat once they reach four-feet-nine-inches.
Children must remain in the backseat of the vehicle until they are at least 13 years old.
