After the confirmation of two more pediatric influenza-related deaths by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) in Kent County, the Kent County Health Department is urging residents in Kent County who have not gotten their flu shot to do so.
The two recent deaths mark Michigan's fourth and fifth pediatric flu deaths of the 2024-2025 season. In a news release, Dr. Adam London, Health Officer for the Kent County Health Department said, "“We are deeply saddened by the loss of these young lives to influenza. This is a heartbreaking reminder that while the flu can be mild for some, it poses serious health risks for others. We encourage anyone who has not received a flu shot this season to consider doing so as soon as possible to protect our community and our children."
Influenza activity remains very high across the state of Michigan. The CDC continues to recommend annual flu vaccinations for all individuals ages six months and older, as well as maintaining other preventive measures to reduce the spread of the virus such as staying home when sick and practicing good hygiene.
