DNR reminding hunters of safety tips for start of firearm deer season

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is patrolling and making sure hunters are following the rules for opening day of firearm deer season.

Officers were checking hunting licenses in the Allegan State Game Arena on Friday afternoon.

LT. Gerald Thayer, district law supervisor for southwest Michigan, says officers respond to many complaints on opening day as well.

Thayer says they had a trespass complaint, a bait complaint and a report of someone hunting in an area they shouldn't have been.

The DNR reminds hunters to keep their licenses on them, wear orange, practice tree stand safety and to never point their weapon at a target until they know what is beyond that target.
