GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A 48-year-old father from Cedar Springs who prosecutors say locked his seven-year-old son in a wooden box at night has been ordered to spend at least the next 28 months in prison.

Judge George Quist said the sentence was appropriate due to the criminal history of Michael Rus.

The discovery was made during a welfare check at an apartment that was shared by Rus and his girlfriend, Jessica Kilgore.

Kilgore was given a jail and probation sentence.

Prosecutors found wooden box during a welfare check at the couple's apartment.
