Storm damages Kent County Animal Shelter's new outdoor dog park

Kent County Animal Shelter has closed its new outdoor park expansion due to storm damage, just a week and a half after celebrating its grand opening.

Paid for with funds from the Marie B. Schipper Trust, which donated $90,000 in 2023, the dog park is located next to the shelter at 740 Fuller Ave. It featured a raised platform, tire obstacle course, tree stumps and more for the dogs' enrichment.

But on Tuesday, high winds brought on by severe storms knocked down trees that damaged the fencing around the park, forcing them to temporarily close the park for repairs.
