The John Ball Zoo says Abena, a female lion, has died.
The zoo says Abena was dealing with mobility challenges and arthritis and medications were no longer keeping her comfortable.
Doctors had been administering monthly injections for comfort.
Abena was less than a month away from turning 18.
African lions have a median life expectancy of 17.
