Consumers Energy to bury power lines in pilot program

The Michigan Public Service Commission is approving a 3.7-million-dollar project by Consumers Energy to bury overhead power lines.

Consumers says the program will start with the company burying 10 miles of power lines in the next year with an attempt to improve electric service for customers.

The utility says buried lines are better protected from outage situations like heavy snow, strong winds, falling trees and more.

The pilot will begin with lines located in Allegan, Genesee, Iosco, Livingston, Montcalm and Ottawa counties.
