MI Court of Appeals will not reconsider ruling in Schurr case

The Michigan Court of Appeals will not reconsider a ruling that former Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr should stand trial for the murder of Patrick Lyoya.

Schurr's attorneys had requested the court reevaluate their previous decision, stating the court misconstrued moments leading up to the shooting.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says the law was properly applied.

Schurr shot and killed Patrick Lyoya after a traffic stop on April 4, 2022 turned into a struggle over the former officer's taser.

Prosecutors say Schurr was not justified in shooting Lyoya and charged him with second-degree murder.

Schurr's attorneys argue he was justified.
