GR may allow taller buildings downtown

The Grand Rapids skyline may see taller buildings in the coming years.

The Grand Rapids Planning Commission is approving an amendment that would allow taller buildings in the downtown area.

The core downtown area does not currently have any restrictions on building heights.

The area west of Seward Avenue, east of Lafayette Avenue, South of Wealthy Street and north of downtown, would change from a 10 story limit to a 20 story limit.

While an area surrounding that limit would change from seven stories to a 10 stories limit.

The amendment still needs to be approved by the full Grand Rapids City Commission.
