Man charged with federal counts for dredging Sleeping Bear Dunes river

(WOOD AM) - After a 2017 project was scrapped to stop dredging a portion of Platte River inside of the Sleeping Bear Dunes area, a local man decided to continue production illegally.

62-year-old Andrew Howard was charged with tampering and vandalism after he attempted to continue making a new pathway within the river. The National Park Service says they stopped the dredging in the first place because to allow for "natural resources to be on their own terms."

Howard now faces up to six months in jail and five years of probation.
