Teen suspect in fatal stabbing in Grand Rapids charged as an adult

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Police say a 17-year-old was charged Friday as an adult in a fatal stabbing that happened downtown on May 24.

They say Luiz Vasquez was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Gatlok Nguamy. He was stabbed around 12:20 that morning on Goodrich Street near Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, and later died at a hospital.

In a written statement, interim Police Chief Joe Trigg called it a senseless tragedy. "It should have been a fun night out for a group of young people," Trigg said. "Instead, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate is dead, and a 17-year-old could spend the rest of his life in prison."
