DEARBORN, Mich. -- Triple-A Michigan predicts more than 1.3 million Michigan residents will be traveling out of town for the Memorial Day weekend period.
"And that's up about half a percentage point compared to this time last year," Auto Club spokeswoman Adrienne Woodland told WOOD Radio News. "So, we're seeing an increase in folks that plan to travel for Memorial Day. But it's still the second-highest on record since Triple-A has begun keeping these numbers."
The Auto Club anticipates the highest volume of traffic on the roads will be next Thursday and Friday, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. And on the afternoon of Monday, May 25.
The Memorial Day weekend travel period begins May 21 and runs through May 25.
Incidentally, the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says a “Click It or Ticket” campaign kicks off Monday, May 18, and runs through May 31.
Michigan State Police troopers and officers from local and county police agencies across the state will be conducting seat belt enforcement. The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute says 222 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2024 because they were not wearing their seat belt.
In Michigan, a police officer can stop and ticket a motorist solely for not wearing a seat belt.
The State Police have set a goal of reducing traffic fatalities in Michigan by 30 percent by 2030.
