Grand Rapids Enforces Youth Curfew Amid Safety Concerns

As warmer months approach, the Grand Rapids Police Department is reminding residents of the city's youth curfew to ensure the safety of young people. The ordinance requires children who are 11 years old and younger to be indoors by 10 p.m., those aged 12 to 14 by 11 p.m., and 15- and 16-year-olds by midnight. This curfew does not apply if they are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or an adult over 21 designated by a parent.

City of Grand Rapids Curfew Ordinance

  • Children 11 years and under MUST be in by 10:00 p.m.
  • Children 12, 13, and 14 MUST be in by 11:00 p.m.
  • Children 15 and 16 MUST be in by 12:00 a.m. (midnight).

Violations of the curfew can result in penalties, including up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine for both the minors and their parents. Eric Brown, President and CEO of the Urban League of West Michigan, highlighted the importance of these regulations in protecting young people from potential exposure to crime and hazardous situations.

While Grand Rapids enforces its curfew, some states, like Texas, have taken steps to eliminate such ordinances. In 2023, Texas passed a law prohibiting cities and counties from enforcing juvenile curfews, except during emergencies. The National Youth Rights Association views this as a positive step towards youth rights.
