MSP: Alcohol and drugs may have contributed to fatal traffic crash on I-96

LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Michigan State Police suspect drugs and alcohol may have played a role in a traffic crash Tuesday afternoon that claimed the life of a 19-month-old girl.

She was a passenger in a pickup truck that went off westbound I-96 near Alden Nash Avenue just before 2 p.m. in Lowell Township.

State troopers say the pickup had been traveling at a high rate of speed and in an erratic manner, traveling from the median side of the roadway to the shoulder before going off the freeway and striking some trees. They are waiting for toxicology results to come back on the 41-year-old driver from Lansing.

Police say charges may be sought against her at a later date. She suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The expressway was closed for approximately one and a half hours while troopers conducted the on-scene investigation and crash reconstruction.
