MUSKEGON, Mich. -- A 12-hour manhunt Saturday led to the arrest of a murder suspect.
City police say 26-year-old Dominic James Pearcy was booked into the Muskegon County Jail on Monday. He is suspected of shooting a 28-year-old Muskegon man in the upper body at a home on McIlwraith Street near Wood Street. That was around 5:40 a.m.
He was booked into jail on a charge of open murder. Formal charges (arraignment) were pending Monday afternoon.
"At this time, it appears that (Pearcy) had fled the state and was possibly returning back to Muskegon - maybe to turn himself in," Muskegon Police Captain Tim Bahorski told WOOD Radio in a Monday afternoon phone interview.
He said his department does not typically release the name of a shooting victim until after court proceedings begin, out of respect to the victim's family and as a matter of policy.
"The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still somewhat unclear to us; we're still investigating that," he said. "There is no indication that any altercation occurred. We're trying to determine what transpired inside the house."
U.S. Marshals and Michigan State Police arrested Pearcy in Jackson around 6 p.m. Saturday.
Police are investigating what led to the shooting. They believe the two knew each other.
"The Muskegon Police Department would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the victims' family and friends, and anyone else affected by this tragedy," Capt. Bahorski said.
MPD thanked its law enforcement partners who were involved in the apprehension of the suspect, including MSP's Fugitive Team, the Norton Shores Police Department and the agencies in the Jackson area who assisted.
"Due to their coordinated effort and hard work, it took about 12 hours from the time we received the initial call to the time the suspect was taken into custody and identified," Bahorski said.
