Box truck crash in Georgetown Township leads to HazMat situation

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Authorities in Ottawa County are investigating a one-vehicle crash that caused a hazardous materials situation Friday afternoon.

The location was Bauer Road near 40th Avenue. The time was just after 1 o'clock.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says a 40-year-old Wyoming man lost control of a 2008 Freightliner box truck. It went off the roadway on the north side of Bauer Road and hit a fire hydrant. The box truck came to rest in a creek. It leaked diesel fuel into the creek.

The OCSO said in a news release that the Ottawa County Emergency Management/Hazmat team and the Ottawa County Water Resources Department responded to the scene for cleanup. Sheriff's deputies and the Georgetown Township Fire Department also responded.

Police said the driver of the truck and his 31-year-old male passenger from Grand Rapids were not injured. An investigation is underway.
