Witness says driver had green light when pedestrian fatally struck on US-31

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Holland Department of Public Safety says a 62-year-old Holland man has died after being hit by a car early Thursday morning.

Witnesses told police the driver of the vehicle had a green light on northbound US-31 when the pedestrian started walking across the intersection at 24th Street.

That was just after 1 a.m.

Police said in a news release that the 28-year-old Saugatuck man who was driving the vehicle was uninjured. But the pedestrian was unresponsive when paramedics arrived on the scene. He later died at a hospital.

The investigation continues. The vehicle involved was a 2018 Toyota Corolla.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification.  Police said alcohol may have contributed to the crash - pertaining to the pedestrian, not the driver.
