MSP investigating trooper-involved shooting in Muskegon Township

MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Michigan State Police Fifth District Post in Paw Paw is investigating a trooper-involved shooting Monday night in Muskegon Township.

It happened around 7 o'clock at a home on South Sheridan Avenue.

Police from multiple agencies responded on a report of an armed, suicidal man. They say a 58-year-old man was standing just inside the residence and held up a gun, but did not fire at police. WOOD-TV reports a State Police trooper from the Grand Rapids Post shot him.

The 58-year-old man was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition Tuesday. No one else was hurt.

The man's name had not been released at the time of this report early Tuesday afternoon.

The trooper was placed on standard administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. Police say the case will then be submitted to the Michigan Department of Attorney General for review.

A 58-year-old male was seen standing just inside the residence while holding a firearm. During the encounter, the man presented a firearm and a trooper fired their duty weapon striking the man. The man was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. He is currently in stable condition. No law enforcement officers or members of the community were hurt during the incident. In accordance with department policy, the trooper from the Grand Rapids Post has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Upon completion, the case will be submitted to the Michigan Department of Attorney General for review.
