Fourth-grader who helped save man's life with CPR to receive award Friday

MARTIN, Mich. -- A fourth-grade student at Brandon Elementary School in Martin will receive a Heart Saver award during a school-wide assembly Friday morning.

It will get underway at 8:15 a.m.

Nine-year-old Logan Vangemert will be joined by school staff at the award presentation. American Heart Association spokeswoman Remi Monaghan tells us the boy attended a Heart Association program at the school in February that explained how to perform CPR.

"And literally watched the video of how to perform hands-only CPR on a Saturday," Monaghan explained. "And on Sunday morning, he was in his church, in the kids' room, and the supervisor of the room is named Mr. Tom. And he collapsed onto the floor and was in sudden cardiac arrest."

Monaghan told WOOD Radio News that Logan stepped in to help and got some assistance in saving the man's life.

"There were several adults who helped him, as well," she said. "The church, luckily, had an AED, so they were able to resuscitate Tom. And he's alive today because Logan knew how to perform hands-only CPR."

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable, life-saving device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and delivers an electric shock, if needed.

"We're just so incredibly proud of (Logan's) bravery and his action to step in that day and save Mr. Tom," Monaghan said. "You know, performing hands-only CPR for anybody can be really scary. And you are most likely to perform hands-only CPR on somebody you know."
