GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A homeowner noticed fire coming from a chimney just before 10 o'clock Tuesday night on Lakeshore Drive near Oak Grove in Grand Haven Township.
The homeowner, at first, did not see anything but later spotted a fire in the roof area.
Township Fire Captain Matt Schweitzer tells WOOD Radio News it appears that lightning hit it, causing a fire that spread to the attic.
"So, damage was obviously to the main floor living room," he said. "And then, some adjoining bedrooms had fire damage in the attic space. But it was actually relatively minimal compared to what it could have been, if it would've kept going."
Everyone got out of the two-story home safely.
"Crews got into the attic and extinguished the fire," Capt. Schweitzer said. "So, a really good stop on the fire and it minimized fire to the home."
Assisting Grand Haven Township firefighters at the scene were crews from the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, Port Sheldon Township and Robinson Township.
The home is just down the road from the Grand Rapids Water Treatment facility in the township.
