MLK Jr. Bridge to close over US-131 this spring in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A section of Martin Luther King Jr. Street just east of the US-131 overpass will be replaced this spring, and some prep work for the project begins next week in Grand Rapids.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman John Richard tells WOOD Radio News some tree removal and utility work will begin March 1.

"To the east of the northbound on- and off-ramps," he clarified. "So, it's not a section that's over US-131, because that was built when the highway was built. This section is older. It's a hundred years old. We're told it was train tracks back in the day."

The bridge and the northbound U-S 131 on- and off-ramps will be closed during the project. The southbound on- and off-ramps will stay open. Traffic will be detoured to Division Avenue. Richard tells us there will be a public meeting sometime in mid-March to disclose more details about the project, which will begin in earnest in April.

MDOT figures it will about an eight-month project, depending on the weather.
