Nine fire departments respond to apartment house fire in Spring Lake Twp.

SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Investigators say there is no indication yet what started a house fire late Saturday afternoon in Spring Lake Township.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from nine departments were called to the home around 5:15 p.m. on Littlefield Lane near Fruitport Road, and the second story was engulfed in flames by the time they got on scene. Spring Lake Fire Chief John Stalzer told WOOD Radio the house was originally constructed as a carriage building in the late 1880s, but in recent years had been converted into two residential apartments with a shared garage.

He says firefighters took a defensive posture for safety purposes due to concerns about the structural integrity of the floor and roof. The fire was brought under control around 8 p.m. Saturday. Crews from seven departments assisted Spring Lake firefighters at the scene.

Spring Lake Fire Department also provided a news release:

The Spring Lake Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on Saturday, February 14, at 15669 Littlefield Lane following a 5:17 p.m. report of a fire on the exterior of a building.

The structure, originally built in the late 1800s as a carriage building, had in recent years been converted into two residential apartments with a shared garage space. Fire crews arrived on scene within six minutes of dispatch and immediately upgraded the incident to a full residential structure fire. Initial operations involved both interior and exterior fire attacks.

Due to concerns about the structural integrity of the floor and roof, crews were transitioned to a defensive posture for safety. The fire was declared under control shortly after 8:00 p.m. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
