Slippery roads, low visibility cause many crashes, some freeway closures

WEST MICHIGAN -- Slippery roads and near- whiteout conditions made for a difficult drive Tuesday.

Michigan State Police told WOOD Radio that eastbound M-6 was shut down at Broadmoor Avenue due to a multi-vehicle crash late in the morning, with a pin-in.

The chain-reaction crash occurred south of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport around 10:30 a.m.

As of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Kent County dispatchers told us eastbound M-6 remained shut down due to the crash east of 60th Avenue near Thornapple Drive in Cascade Township. That caused a large traffic backup for a few hours. It reopened around 5:45 p.m.

Michigan State Police did not have an exact count as of mid-afternoon, but initially said up to 30 vehicles were involved, including seven semi-trucks. One of the semi drivers suffered a minor injury after being pinned inside the truck's cab. A State Trooper told us the driver was removed from the wreckage by first responders and suffered some cuts and bruises.

There also were a few rollover crashes in West Michigan, such as the one around 7 a.m. on northbound US-131 at 68th Street in Cutlerville. In Ottawa County, a semi-truck and a car went off the road and into a ditch on eastbound I-196 around 10 a.m. The freeway was shut down there until just after noon. There was no report of any injuries.
