Wedgwood raises awareness, provides support for human trafficking victims

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

The national observance educates the public on ways to prevent the crime. Kori Thompson is the Advancement & Community Development Officer at Wedgwood Christian Services in Grand Rapids. She told WOOD Radio News they provide mental and behavioral health services, including support for people who have been abused.

"For girls as young as 14 all the way up to 18 who've been sex-trafficked," Thompson said. "As well as many other youths coming to us from a lot of different backgrounds."

The national theme this month is, "Stronger Connections. Stronger Futures," emphasizing the role of strong relationships in prevention. In Michigan, awareness campaigns and evenings are being held throughout the month.

Wedgwood works closely with the West Michigan Human Trafficking Coalition and other agencies in the area to raise awareness and education.

"This is definitely something that is prevalent in our area," Thompson said. "We work to bring about understanding not only for how to spot it - what to look for and how to be thoughtful in your interactions - but how to create safe spaces for those who may be survivors."

National Human Trafficking Awareness Day is January 11.
