Ford International Airport offers tips, amenities to help holiday travel

CASCADE CHARTER TOWNSHP, Mich. -- The Gerald R. Ford International Airport is making the hectic holiday travel season a little easier.

Communications Supervisor Heidi Groenboem told WOOD Radio in a phone interview airport officials expect to see about 119,000 passengers from Friday, Dec. 19, through January 2.

"If you're traveling with families, we have a pre- and post-security kids' port play area," she said. "Then, we also have for those traveling with pets or service animals we have pre- and post-security pet relief areas, as well."

Groenboom said it is a good idea to arrive two hours before your plane's scheduled departure time.

"Just so you can find a parking spot, check your bag, get through checkpoint, maybe grab a coffee and find your gate. And get updated on your latest gate information, as well," she said.

The cellphone area has been moved closer to the terminal to accommodate people who are picking up or dropping off passengers.

"And if you are parking or leaving your car at the airport, we have a few different options," Groenboom said. "We have our economy lot with a shuttle bus that runs 24/7 every 15 minutes or so. And then, our north lot and parking garages, as well."

Additionally, Operation Handshake will be held on Tuesday, December 23rd, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., where military-affiliated groups and community members will greet and thank active military and veterans as they arrive to West Michigan for the holidays.

The airport's new mascot, Jerry the Jet, will also be making an appearance around the terminal on Friday, wishing passengers happy holidays.
