Fans of Valley Field make final donation push to restore iconic ballpark

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Fans of Valley Field organization is seeking two more major donors to help them reach a $4.9-million fundraising goal towards the restoration of Valley Field, also known as Sullivan Field.

The 1937-built ballpark had fallen into disrepair over the years.

Organizers of the driving are trying to raise the remaining $300,000. Paul Soltysiak is the founder and vice president of the group. He said on West Michigan's Morning News the community support is paying for major renovation of the park.

"We've gotten a lot of good, major sponsors because of the love of the community," Soltysiak told WOOD Radio. "And, in turn, that's going to help make it a really, really nice baseball facility."

Part of the renovation will include adding a small museum to honor baseball history in Grand Rapids.

"And there really isn't a place like that right now," Soltysiak said. "So, people have been coming forward and giving us some really, really cool stuff, like today we brought an old Brann's jersey from the 1940s."
