Fourth person dies following wrong-way crash on US-131 in Allegan County

MARTIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Another person has died following Sunday morning's wrong-way crash on northbound US-131 in Allegan County's Martin Township.

Allegan County Sheriff's Lieutenant Brandon Berens told WOOD Radio that the 17-year-old girl from Portage was a passenger in the car that was going in the right direction.

"We believe that the others involved are still in serious-to-critical condition," he said. "We were able to confirm that the suspect vehicle did exit at 129th Avenue and, then, re-entered northbound US-131 from 129th Avenue before executing a U-turn."

Berens said in a phone interview the investigation is ongoing regarding the 38-year-old Grand Rapids woman who was the wrong-way driver in the head-on crash. He identifies her as Erin Louise Jones.

"We're waiting for toxicology results to confirm the driver's levels with any alcohol or drugs that may've been in her system," Berens said.

The crash occurred around 1 a.m. Sunday in Martin Township. Berens says the wrong-way driver turned around at 129th Avenue, and then drove back towards oncoming traffic.

Four people have died from that crash. Police identified the driver of the car that was going in the correct direction as 18-year-old Emmanuel Browning of Kalamazoo.

Here is a statement from the Allegan County Sheriff's Office:

There will be no other names released by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office out of respect to the families of the deceased victims who have made this request as well as the juvenile status of others involved in the crash. The Allegan County Crash Reconstruction Team will continue their investigation into the coming days and weeks and more information will be released if it becomes available.
