VERGENNES TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Kent County Sheriff's Office has identified the two men who died in a small plane crash around 4:30 p.m. Monday in Vergennes Township.
They say 62-year-old Kevin Lawrence of Presque Isle and 68-year-old Paul Shalk of Rogers City were killed when the aircraft crashed into a storage facility near the intersection of Vergennes Street and Lincoln Lake Avenue. That's not far from the Lowell City Airport.
"It's right near the airport runway," Sgt. Scott Dietrich told WOOD Radio in a phone interview. "The aircraft originally departed from Alpena and was en route to the Grand Rapids area when it went down."
Police say the aircraft had departed from Alpena. Federal investigators arrived at the scene Tuesday to investigate the cause of the crash.
