GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --
The Grand Rapids Police have identified Damarius Cochran as the 26-year-old man who was gunned down Saturday night on the city's southeast side. They say 32-year-old Deveon Dominique Hayle has been charged with open murder and felony weapons charges.
The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday on 28th Street near Jefferson Avenue. The Grand Rapids Police says its Special Response (SRT) tactical team surrounded a motel and says the suspect surrendered a few hours later.
Hayle is being held in the Kent County Jail.
Here are more details provided by the GRPD in a news release:
Officers were initially dispatched to the Pleasant Motel (171 28th Street SE) on a medical call, with the caller believing the victim was in the midst of an overdose. Responding officers located the victim and determined he had been shot. First responders provided life-saving measures, but the victim died shortly after arriving at a local hospital.
Following an autopsy by the Kent County Medical Examiner, the death was ruled a homicide. The victim has been identified as Damarius Cochran, aged 26.
The initial investigation led officers to believe that the suspect was staying at the motel and was still on the property. A special response team (SRT) tactical operation was implemented to evacuate those in the area, and initiate contact with the suspect. The suspect surrendered to police without incident.
Devon Dominique Hayle, aged 32, has been charged with open murder and felony weapons charges. He remains in custody at the Kent County Correctional Facility.
“This was exemplary work by responding officers,” said Chief Eric Winstrom. “The suspect was in police custody within a few hours of the shooting, with no use of force necessary and while keeping those in the area safe, including an adult woman and three children associated with the suspect. We extend our condolences to Damarius’ loved ones.”
Even though a suspect has been charged, anyone with additional information relevant to the case is encouraged to contact GRPD or Silent Observer.
