WEST MICHIGAN, Mich. -- The Michigan Department of Transportation will begin doing repairs to some area freeways on Monday, May 12.
It said you can expect lane and ramp closures on a three-mile stretch of I-96 between the East Beltline and Cascade Road beginning Monday. The state transportation department says its crews will be resurfacing the freeway and making joint repairs. There will be weeknight lane closures or total closures from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. And they will last until 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
As part of the nearly $3 million project, there also will be intermittent ramp closures on the I-96 interchanges at the East Beltline, Fulton Street and Cascade Road.
There will be total closures at night at the junction of I-96 and I-196, with a detour route posted.
The project is scheduled to be finished by mid-July. M-DOT said in a news release:
Traffic restrictions: Weeknight (7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.) lane closures, ramp closures and total closures with detours will be in effect throughout the project. Weekend restrictions will remain in place until 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Ramps at the I-96 interchanges with E. Beltline Avenue, M-21 (Fulton Street) and Cascade Road will be closed intermittently. Nightly total closures will be in place at the I-96/I-196 junction, with westbound traffic detoured to Cascade Road and eastbound traffic detoured to E. Beltline Avenue.
Jobs numbers: Based on economic modeling, this $3 million investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 29 jobs.
Safety Benefits: This project will improve the ride and extend the service life of the roadway.
In Allegan County, M-DOT said it is investing about $3 million dollars to upgrade some bridges in near Holland. The repair work will be on the I-196 bridges over the C-S-X Railroad just east of the I-196/M-40 interchange. The project will run through August. Lane closures will be in effect.
In Grand Rapids: Lane and ramp closures for road and bridge work are scheduled for 7 p.m. this Sunday through 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 on southbound US-131 from Leonard Street to Wealthy Street. During this time, the following ramps will also be closed:
-On ramps from Pearl Street and Leonard Street/Turner Avenue to southbound US-131,
