GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Kent County Sheriff's Office says a Rapid Transit bus rear-ended a vehicle on Kalamazoo Avenue near M-6 on Tuesday afternoon, leading to a multi-vehicle chain-reaction crash.
In all, eight vehicles including the bus were involved.
Sgt. Eric Dietrich told WOOD Radio it happened around 2:40 p.m. and there was no immediate word on what caused it or who was at fault. But he said a bus rear-ended a car, which started the chain reaction.
It was in the southbound lanes, just north of M-6, otherwise known as the Paul Henry Freeway.
"Minor damage to the cars. There were some minor injuries, but nobody wanted to go to the hospital," Dietrich said.
No one on board the bus was injured.
It was the second injury crash on Kalamazoo Avenue in Gaines Township during the past week. On Sunday, April 13, a 26-year-old motorcyclist from Allendale died in a collision with a minivan just north of 100th Street.
It happened around 5:20 p.m.
Dietrich said the 41-year-old woman who was driving the minivan was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. She is from Caledonia.
"There's quite extensive damage to her minivan from the collision," Dietrich said.
Both vehicles were heading northbound at the time.
"The motorcyclist was found to be driving at a high speed," Sgt. Dietrich said, reporting on the initial findings of the KCSO Traffic Safety Unit.
"The driver of the minivan was attempting to make a left turn. The motorcycle was behind the minivan and at a high speed and unable to avoid the collision. He died right on the scene," Dietrich said.
He added that police do not suspect alcohol was involved in the crash, but toxicology tests might be done on the motorcyclist.
