Police investigating Grand Rapids commercial building fire as suspicious

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A Sunday fire that significantly damaged a commercial building on South Division Avenue near Baylis Street in the Burton Heights neighborhood is now being investigated by police as suspicious.

Rafael Torres tells WOOD-TV that he ran the building's tattoo parlor while his mother managed the hair salon next door.

"We came from sleeping with roaches, evictions, prisons," Torres said. "It wasn’t much, but we felt like we made it with this."

A Michigan State Police arson crew was on scene Monday.

Torres says he thinks the fire was set deliberately.
