GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Commissioners say they have no intention of having Kent County become a sanctuary county.
At yesterday's board meeting, the commissioners said they are navigating changing federal policy on immigration to determine their best path.
"The board's role is to concentrate on matters within its legal jurisdiction, leaving policy decisions on immigration and other federal matters to those with the authority to make and enforce them." Kent County Administrator Al Vanderberg said. "That is why the board does not adopt these types of resolutions."
The Kent County Sheriff's Office will continue to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The board says it has received thousands of emails on the topic, with about 70 percent of residents of residents saying they're opposed to a sanctuary county designation.
