FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP (WOOD-AM) - The Michigan Department of Transportation says a culvert replacement project will force a closure of westbound Interstate 96 between Nunica and Norton Shores at 7 p.m.

The agency's recommended detrour will take you on surface streets from Spring Lake to Ferrysburg.

The marked detour along M-104 to U.S. 31 spans about 13 miles and takes roughly 20 minutes

"We like to keep everything open,” MDOT spokesman John Richard told WOOD-TV. "But the full closures benefit everybody because the project is safer for workers and drivers and the work gets done much quicker."

MDOT says the freeway is expected to reopen Monday afternoon.
