Wings Over Muskegon to take off Friday at 5 p.m.

MUSKEGON, Mich. -- The second annual Wings Over Muskegon air show gets underway at 5 p.m. Friday with a Twilight Show, along with live music and a full lineup of aerial performers.

Muskegon County Airport Deputy Director Mark Lynn told WOOD Radio what you can expect to see.

"We've got Kyle Franklin - Franklin's Flying Circus - doing his (so-called) 'Stolen Drunk Act' there with his airplane," Lynn said. "We have the last year of the demo for the A-10 Thunderbolt Air Force closed air support type of aircraft."

A Douglas C-54 airplane also will be there. It was used to transport U.S. presidents in the 1960s.

"And all kinds of good general aviation displays and other flying activities," Lynn said.

The Wings Over Muskegon air show will not be held next year due to a large airfield reconstruction project.

Here are more details about that project from an airport and air show joint news release:

On August 6th, 2024, the Muskegon County Airport received funding arrangements for a critical FAA-sponsored project to begin in the spring of 2025. The 6-month, 20-million-dollar project involves complete removal of the existing 6,500’ taxiway alpha, its runway connectors and all existing lighting, NAVAID and underground utilities. The taxiway and its systems will then be reconstructed further to the southeast with all new infrastructure and new connectors outside the high-energy areas near the center of runway 6/24. Built in the 1960s, taxiway alpha is one of the oldest surfaces on the airport and is in immediate need of replacement.

The project will execute in several phases throughout the spring/summer/fall and will drive day-to-day handling changes that may cause significant impact to ground traffic on the airport. Taxiway alpha is an important infrastructure piece for all operations, but it’s especially critical during an air show as it parallels the only active runway during times when show-related surfaces are closed. Routine scheduled air service and general aviation operations will not be affected throughout project, but it’s imperative that aviators check local NOTAMs every time they fly to stay up to date on current construction phasing.

Airport staff, in close collaboration with the team at the Michigan Flight Museum and other stakeholders, have decided that the Muskegon County Airport will not host the Wings Over Muskegon Air Show in 2025. This will allow adequate time for the complete relocation of taxiway alpha and sets the stage for an expected return of Wings Over Muskegon in 2026.
