FSU assists fraternity members after off-campus house fire

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- An off-campus fire displaced eight members of a Ferris State fraternity from their home Wednesday, but the university is providing temporary housing for them.

It happened on West Pine Street near Rose Avenue in Big Rapids.

FSU says in a news release they also are receiving food and supplies. Members of the Theta Theta chapter of the Sigma Pi fraternity and their dog, Mars, all escaped without injury. Authorities are investigating how the fire began.

Fraternity President Bryce Porter says residents discovered the power was out around 8 a.m. They smelled smoke, noticed that a wall felt warm and called the fire department.

Porter said the fraternity was planning to move into a new house next month and could have access to the building next week.
