LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Lowell Charter Township Planning Commission will discuss a proposed zoning ordinance text amendment and conditional rezoning application by Microsoft.

Microsoft is seeking a rezoning involving several parcels, plus a request to amend the Township’s zoning ordinance to add data centers as a permitted use within the LI – Light Industrial District.

It concerns a potential data center. The corporation won't field questions from the public at Monday's meeting, which gets underway at 7 o'clock in the Grand Agricultural Center of West Michigan, Building 2, at 13801 Cascade Rd SE.

Microsoft recently submitted a revised rezoning request. It has been eyeing a potential site in the Covenant Business Park for a data center but does not own property there. The first reading of an ordinance for a proposed six-month moratorium on data centers was held April 20. The township board held the second reading of a proposed six-month moratorium on data centers during its May 18th meeting. Following discussion, the board voted 5-2 against a moratorium on data center discussions.

If the planning commission approves the changes, the project would still have to go through established review procedures, public engagement opportunities and regulatory requirements before any decisions are made.
