GR inviting residents to community meetings on trash service proposal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The City of Grand Rapids is inviting residents to attend a community meeting to learn more about a proposal for residential trash collection.

The first session is scheduled for Monday, September 15 at 6 p.m. at Sibley Elementary School. The second session will be held on Thursday, September 18at 6 p.m. at GRPS University. The events will include a short presentation and time for residents to ask questions. Public Works staff will be on site to listen and answer questions as well.

The proposal is for a Single Hauler alternative that would make the City the sole provider for residential refuse collection for all single-family homes and small multi-unit buildings. The city wants to hear more from residents before a final decision is made.

The system has a goal of improving service quality, reducing the number of heavy trucks on neighborhood streets, creating a more efficient and equitable system for all residents and lowering environmental impacts. Grand Rapids says the single hauler would streamline operations and ensure consistent service standards across all neighborhoods.

"Your voice matters," says Community Engagement Manager Andrea Riley-Mukavetz. "We want to work together to explain why we are considering this change to your curbside waste collection service. We hope to explain the alternative, understand your experiences and see what other feedback you can provide to enhance any future proposal."
