City of GR looking at setting up emergency fund

The city of Grand Rapids is looking at creating a new community emergency fund to help with disaster relief.

Grand Rapids Fire Chief Brad Brown oversees emergency management and says there is federal and state funding for emergencies however many situations fit into a gray area and there are not currently many tools to help those residents.

The fund would be supported by donations from organizations like United Way.

The idea comes after a water main break in June caused damage to roughly 15 homes in the area.

The city denied claims for damage citing governmental immunity.
