Lawyers petition to move murder case to federal court

Lawyers for the former Michigan State Police detective sergeant who is charged with the murder of Samuel Sterling are requesting to move the case to federal court.

Sterling was a probation absconder and was wanted on felony charges.

Police made contact with him on April 17 and he ran away.

Officers chased him into the Burger King parking lot in Kentwood where he was hit with an unmarked cruiser that was driver by Brian Keely.

Keely died in the hospital hours later from "multiple blunt force injuries."

Keely's lawyers argue the case should be moved as he was assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force when the incident happened.
