John Ball Zoo and Grand Valley State University are monitoring the freshwater mussel species in the Grand River.
Of the 43 mussel species in the state of Michigan, 32 of them are found in the Grand River.
Thirteen of those species are endangered, threatened or of special concern.
The organizations are working to update a survey to measure mussel diversity and how they impact pollution and channelization of the river.
