The Grand Rapids Public Museum is using a $500,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for expansion and renovation projects.
Public Museum chief curator Alex Forist says a two-story community space will feature a classroom, artifact lab and meeting spaces and improvements will be made to the collections area.
The museum will get a new processing room for artifacts, renovated storage and a new science lab.
An additional $1.5M will need to be raised to complete the projects.
