HOPKINS TOWNSHIP (WOOD-AM) - More than 12,000 and businesses in Allegan County are getting hooked up to high-speed internet.

Crews, starting this month, will start installing over a thousand miles of "backbone" fiber cable.

"There are huge swaths of Allegan (County) that have no high-speed internet, and frankly they don't have good cell coverage either," project manager Jill Dunham tells WOOD-TV.

Funding for the project primarily comes from the American Rescue Plan.

Work is expected to be finished within the next two years.
