Grand Rapids Community College interns home safe from Maui fire

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Two Grand Rapids Community College students who were in Maui for a culinary internship are home safe.

Emma Sutherland says Bakery Lahaina, where she worked, and Kimo's Lahaina Restaurant, where Jessica Tocila worked, were both destroyed by the flames.

"Our smoke detectors were going off and it was just black outside. We couldn't see much," Tocila told WOOD-TV. "And it was super windy, everything was blowing in, and that's when we realized how urgent this was."

Both arrived home on Saturday.
