Man to face trial for shooting death of toddler

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A man will go to trial for the death of a two-year-old child that accidently shot himself after getting his hands on an unsecured handgun.

22-year-old Markus Nevills Jr. faces a 15-year prison sentence for one count of involuntary manslaughter as he was said to have been watching over the boy during the time of the incident.

Nevills Jr. admitted to leaving the unsecured handgun in a couch. The boy managed to find the gun when it discharged and struck him.

The suspect remains in Kent County Jail while awaiting trial.
